Muay Thai vs BJJ: Which One is Right for You?

DSC_0149-1aMuay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are both exciting forms of martial arts that are enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Deciding which one to train in can be a tough choice to make. It really comes down to what style of martial arts you like best.

Reasons to Do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Your body size and muscle mass have nothing to do with your ability to succeed in BJJ. It’s all about the specific skills that you learn while training. This means that you could be the shortest, skinniest person in your class or at a competition and still do quite well.  Being larger or even physically stronger than your opponent doesn’t matter very much when it comes to fighting BJJ style

BJJ is also great for self-defense purposes. This can make it a great choice for women who may be especially concerned about protecting themselves in the event of being in a dangerous situation. Men also benefit from knowing how to protect themselves in an effective fashion.

It also teaches you about the nature of fighting and trains you to think carefully about the strategies that you are using in fights. There’s no mindless punching or kicking. You must calculate your moves according to the situation that you are in.

BJJ is a workout for both the mind and body.  A lot of strategy is required, which makes this sport very mentally stimulating. In addition, many people who practice this form of martial arts feel that there is always something new to learn or something to improve on.

Positives of Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a physically demanding form of martial arts that involves kicking and striking. It’s great for building muscle and for maintaining your weight. Many who train in this sport mention having more muscle definition, particularly in the legs and abs.

If you are interested in mixed martial arts or are already and MMA fighting, give Muay Thai some serious consideration. While training, you can learn to increase how far your strikes extend. You also learn to how to fight with your legs. In this style of fighting, kicks can be used as an extremely effecting method for fending off an opponent’s attacks or for bringing you opponent down. Such fighting techniques can make a big difference in MMA competitions.

Benefits of Both

While it’s easy to get into a big debate about which is better, know that both Muay Thai and BJJ have excellent benefits. Training in martial arts is a great way to get exercise and to practice physical fitness. It’s also a fantastic way to build confidence and to gain self-defense strategies that might help in real-life situations, not just in a fighting match in an arena.

If you are still feeling uncertain, consider giving both a try. Many companies offer trial classes that can help you make your decision. Remember, it’s all about what suits your individual goals and preferences.

Essentials of a Proper Muay Thai School

learn muay thai 3It is important for you to know what constitutes an effective environment for learning Muay Thai skills. If you want to join a school for training in Muay Thai, you should know of the basic and reasonable conditions that make learning successful and effective. This is what forms the basis of our practice at North Edmonton and St. Albert and that is what puts us at the apex of success as a martial arts school.

A Muay Thai school should have structures and equipment for both aerobic and anaerobic physical exercise. This will enable the trainees to exercise appropriately besides the actual training. A relaxed body can withstand long or prolonged training session while achieving the most in terms of skill acquisition by the trainees.  Arashi Do strives to offer the best equipment available on and off the mats to make your training experience as enjoyable as possible.

Muay Thai schools should have the training mats kept in the most hygienic condition. This will help prevent infections and spread of diseases among trainees. Unfortunately this is not common practice amongst most gyms.  We clean our mats daily, twice on those days where workouts are extra tough to ensure no infections are spread. The health of the students is a priority, it not only makes the school attractive as a martial arts learning destination, but no one wants to miss training because of a nasty rash.  Gym equipment is also cleaned after every use.

The training area in the school is well ventilated, free of clutter as well as fitted with good lighting. This helps to prevent accidents associated with tripping and injuries. It also has basic facilities like changing areas, showers and washrooms. It is important to us to have students train in the most comfortable condition achievable.  I have been to many schools that have gaps in the mat, uneven mats, torn equipment, no changerooms or bathrooms.  The list goes on.

The quality of training for the members should not be compromised by any means. This means a lot both for the success of the student as well as minimizing the cost of managing damages to structures and injuries to our trainees. Therefore our school offers the most professional martial arts instructors available. Our school has set the standards for qualification of instructors in order to ensure that only instructors of good reputation are engaged.

Our martial arts schools has manuals, guides and other learning resources that can help both the trainees and instructors improve their skill sets.  We offer extra matted space to work on techniques before or after class to ensure you nail the moves you need more practice with. It will then make it much easier to assess and manage progress. Our school is constantly investing in resource materials in order to develop the skills it hopes to cultivate in the members.

Arashi Do Martial Arts has a core objective, mission, vision and resolutions that guide the training. We teach with ethical values in mind that display the Art of Muay Thai in a good light to potential students and the community. This is because martial arts are an ancient art that has survived centuries and has bee nurtured through observance of such values.

Our martial arts school has both internal rules that guide trainers and trainees as well as general rules for the standards of the art. We will teach you and help you achieve your goals while also staying strong to the quality needed to advance through the ranks of Muay Thai. This will help you from losing motivation in your goal of the training. This will also boost discipline among the students and establish a culture of responsibility among the trainees.

Muay Thai Training Tips for Beginners

Training in Muay Thai is often a strenuous experience. When you are first starting out, it’s important to make sure that you are in good shape. To become good at Muay Thai, it’s essential to be committed to practicing. Get off to the right start by using the training tips below.

Find the Right Training Center

Do a solid amount of research before you sign up. Observe or even try out a class, if possible, before committing to a particular gym. Look at reviews online and check out the qualifications of the instructors. If you can, talk to people who go there. Where you train has a huge impact on how well you learn Muay Thai and how much you will enjoy the experience, so choose your school wisely.

Invest in Good Equipment

Some schools will have you buy all of the tools that you will need directly from them. Others may allow you bring your own equipment. Either way, don’t be afraid to spend the necessary money to get gloves that have the right amount of support and shin guards that will provide adequate protection from kicks.

Maintain Muscle Mass

The time you spend sparring or practicing Muay Thai is only the beginning of what you’ll need to do to stay in shape for this sport. When you aren’t training, you’ll need to keep up with a cardio exercise routine, such as running and jumping rope, and weight lifting. Strong abdominal muscles make it easier to withstand hits from opponents.

Learn the Proper Fighting Stance

When you’re first starting out, it’s critical to properly learn the correct fighting stance for Muay Thai. This is the foundation of being able to train and spar well, so take the necessary time to learn it. Practice these movements before focusing too much on other fighting techniques.

Repeat, Repeat, Then Repeat Again

Repetition is stressed in Muay Thai, and for good reason. For every defense and offensive move that you learn, you need to be sure that you are doing it correctly. Start off more slowly, then work on improving your speed once you get the moves down.

Practice Your Moves at Home

Get a punching bag or shadow box to practice at home. Everything you learn in class must be repeated constantly and consistently on your own. It’s important to practice every day, so that you are comfortable with the new skills you are learning. With time, you’ll be able to do all of the kicks and strikes with more ease, speed, and skill.

Be Patient

Don’t push yourself to hard and don’t move on to the next level until you’re ready. Everyone who has ever been good at Muay Thai started at the beginning. Take the time now to train properly and to master the basics before moving on.

Muay Thai takes a great deal of time and energy to learn. Don’t get discouraged if it is difficult at first. Just keep training and working hard to improve.
